Hi, Steve -
Thank you for an illuminating presentation on colorful leadership
and managing conflict. Having done desktop publishing including
Photoshop editing for more than a decade, colorful leadership
provided a new and interesting perspective on making adjustments for
the filter problem in management.
Per our conversation following your presentation, I believe
it would be preferable in the long term to let the GMs and AIGs
(deadwood) burn in the financial forest fires and economic
restructuring and thus make "room" for new, innovative technical
recipes to rise form the ashes and prosper in the 21st century.
Keith,
I can see you got the point about the future filter and from that
perspective you hit the nail on the head. What fascinates me
is how individual people can see the same events so differently and
see a whole different set of possibilities. The government
propped up Chrysler and we got some innovative cars that don't look
innovative today, but were complete different in their time.
Union members kept their jobs, dealers kept their companies, and the
government money turned out be a good investment. I don't know
the answers but I enjoy looking at each event through different
filters. It is impossible to predict where the massive
government intervention today will lead in the future. Like
you, I could make the case that propping up weak competitors weakens
the stronger companies and it is best to let things sort themselves
out in the market. On the other hand, we live in a democracy and the
party that won the last election sees things through a different
filter. From that perspective government action makes sense.
